A Closer Look
Algae provide significant advantages as biofuel feedstock. Independent studies find algae capable of producing at least ten times more lipid per acre as compared to other potential crops. Algae can be grown on currently non-productive land, can use non-potable water as a growth medium, and will fix large quantities of CO2. The advantages are clear – the challenge is cost.
Phycal is focused on creating the needed efficiencies via technical advances and system engineering. Our patent pending extraction process, Olexal™, removes the lipid from algae while significantly reducing costs associated with dewatering and extraction. Our open pond design reduces capital costs while sustaining high growth rates and our focus on energy related co-products creates a system design that maximizes revenues while controlling costs.
Phycal is defined by excellent people, strategic vision, a commitment to action and responsible environmental stewardship. The Phycal team is composed of scientists, engineers and management, all of whom have proven track records of excellence in their respective fields. The time has come to deliver algal biofuel at market competitive prices and Phycal’s team is reaching that goal.
Our company is currently conducting research and development activities in a subpilot-scale facility in Ohio and in our algae research laboratory in St. Louis. Phycal Hawai’i R&D will construct a pilot facility in Hawai’i and begin operations in 2010 in preparation for expansion to commercial operations.
